Jim Lampley, who was the youngest sports broadcaster to cover college football and who went on to have an illustrious career as a boxing announcer, bid farewell at HBO’s last fight.
“ABC sports came up with a one-of-a-kind idea,” Lampley recalled. “They wanted to put a college aged announcer on the air and I was chosen. I went out and did something that had not been done before and that led to 44 years of going from one opportunity to the next… eventually I landed at HBO Boxing.”

“I got started at ABC and once I was covering fights at ABC it only made sense to cover fights for for the place doing the best boxing telecasts.”
Lampley covered some of the most celebrated events in sports during his career ranging from major boxing events to five Olympic games as well as college football championships.
